Today was the first time I've been in Davis when it's been raining. By rain, I don't mean slight drizzles, but straight RAIN. The night before, I had been hearing people preparing for the ensuing storm by getting together their rain gear and strapping on last minute fenders. I was not worried at all, thinking whats the worst that could happen? I went to bed that night thinking about more awesome things like what happened on the Family Guy episode i just watched than what was happening tomorrow.
I woke up at my usual 10 pm and i literally said the words "holy shit" when I looked out the window. It was dark, gloomy, sad, and of course raining buckets. The morning was kind of a craze. It was honestly as if a hurricane was piling through Davis. There was no one outside save for the brave soul running across with half-flipped umbrellas and clothes drenched in water. Everyone was assembling their rain gear, preparing for their trek outside. Whenever someone came back from class the group would ask them "how was it out there"? There was a ton of hype building up and I could not wait until 3pm so I could finally go outside to my class.
When the time finally came, I put on all my clothes and went to my first class. It was a relatively short bike ride, from Gilmore Hall in Segundo to Wellman, but I was pretty damn soaked by the time I got there. My hands were freezing, my jeans were sloppy wet, my windbreaker proved its worth by giving no protection against the rain, and my glasses badly needed a pair of windshield wipers.
One of the things I was worried about before I biked was the infamous "freshman stripe". I do not have a fender, and can honestly say that it is NOT a problem. If anything, a front stripe would be a bigger culprit cause the water definitely sprays up on my knees when riding. I also wear my backpack all the time, preventing a lot of gunk from splattering onto my back. All in all, it's not a big deal. I might consider installing some crude invention fender, but for now, I'll be fine.
